Not all women managers in the 20’s earn more than their male colleagues. At least in large companies there is a structured process adopted to analyse the skills, expertise and educational background of an individual to provide them with a package. Women today have indeed come a long way and can compete when it comes to salary with their male counterparts. The perception of women earning more than men in their 20s is just an aberration and may be true only in a very few cases.
There may be a few jobs that require a specialised service by a woman, that only a woman can fulfil and in those cases, may be a woman could get paid more that her colleague. However, this should not be a point of debate as today both men and women in their 20s are judged equally and if women were getting paid more, it would mean the balance has shifted and women have become more powerful in the corporate world.
The argument for a number of years has always been that women are not treated equally and when the time for a promotion comes, it is the man who is given preference over the woman. Women are usually the one’s to give up on their careers when they have kids and when it is time for a promotion, however, today, the trend of working mother’s has become very common with day cares for even newly born kids have come up all around the corner.
Women, like men are taking loans for their education as well, and have to pay it back, and today they are doing it by themselves, without the support of their parents. So, when it comes to promoting them, companies are not confused as they know that they will do justice to the job, even when they have a child. The times have changed and both men and women are treated equally – one is not given preference over the other.
So, to sum things up, I do not know where women are getting paid more than their male counterparts, but if they are men everywhere are definitely going to stand up, take note and make some noise. The man is not the sole bread earner for the family anymore and most newly married couples live separately, so while both may earn equally or the woman may earn more, it is not such a big concern for young India.
